Calendar appointment was sent to all NOMA PDX members for Monday, Nov 4 at lunch. We will host a free training on designing inclusive spaces that support plus sized folks.
We will be sharing a number of additional training sessions for NOMA PDX and UO/PSU NOMAS members in the coming weeks! Keep an eye out.
NOMA PDX/NOMAS members don't need to do anything besides show up on Zoom, participate, and share AIA number/email in the chat to receive credit.
If you have questions, contact us! Members should have gotten the Zoom link in email/invitation.
About this Course
More than 1/3 of the American population is plus size. Why don't our offices, restaurants, retail, or public spaces reflect this through fat-friendly or size-inclusive design and furniture selection? What does it look like to design an equitable world with a literal seat at the table for everyone? How do we advocate for size inclusion with our project clients and peer designers? Learn how to design spaces welcoming to customers, clients, residents, and employees of all sizes. This course was developed in partnership with Rebecca Alexander of AllGo, who developed a review app where plus size people rate the comfort and accessibility of public spaces. AllGo helps people of size go out more, with less anxiety.
HSW Justification:
This is entirely focused on shaping spaces that are inclusive of plus size people, who face a lot of undue discrimination. Uninformed architects can end up designing spaces that are not only unfriendly, but even painful, for plus size folks.
Learning Objective 1:
Summarize the cultural context and design legacies that contribute to the built environment's current inadequacy to fully meet the needs of America's plus size population.
Learning Objective 2:
Elevate stakeholder-defined size-inclusive spatial priorities in interior and architectural design processes.
Learning Objective 3:
Identify size-inclusive design qualities and strategies for application in project furniture selection, spatial configuration, and overall programming of space.
Learning Objective 4:
Determine next steps for advancing size-inclusive design through personal and/or professional practices.
